The rule behind "best"
"Best" is not one thing, so this post fixes a rule and applies it the same way in every category of this series. Of the 29 mid cap funds with a 3-year record, 21 are open to new money, hold at least ₹1,000 crore (average AUM, July–September 2026) and have a 5-year record. They are ranked by 3-year compounded annual return, Direct plan, Growth option, from NAVs to 27 October 2026. On that rule the leader is Invesco India Mid Cap Fund at 21.41% a year, against a category median of 15.43%. With no filter, HSBC Midcap Fund sits first at 21.72%, but it is too young to have a 5-year record (its AUM is ₹16,299 crore), so it does not clear the rule.
A mid cap fund must hold at least 65% in companies ranked 101st to 250th by market value. These firms are past the start-up stage but still small enough to grow fast, and to fall fast. Over three years the category has done much better than large caps, which makes the spread between its funds worth reading closely.
The top five
| Fund | 1 year | 3 years | 5 years | 10 years | Expense ratio | AUM (₹ crore) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Invesco India Mid Cap Fund | −1.63% | 21.41% | 16.79% | 18.32% | 0.77% | 15,234 |
| ICICI Prudential Mid Cap Fund | 1.37% | 19.38% | 14.53% | 15.67% | 1.10% | 8,094 |
| Edelweiss Mid Cap Fund | −2.04% | 18.87% | 15.82% | – | 0.68% | 19,084 |
| ITI Mid Cap Fund | −1.72% | 17.46% | 13.43% | – | 0.91% | 1,494 |
| Motilal Oswal Midcap Fund | −8.09% | 16.77% | 18.25% | 16.33% | 0.92% | 40,809 |
| Category median | −1.89% | 15.43% | 13.41% | – | – | – |
Returns of a year or more are compounded annual rates. Invesco India Mid Cap Fund leads the median by 5.99 points a year over three years, and ICICI Prudential Mid Cap Fund follows at 19.38%.
Risk: what the lead cost
| Fund | Volatility (3 yr) | Worst fall (3 yr) | Sharpe ratio | Alpha vs Nifty Midcap 150 TRI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Invesco India Mid Cap Fund | 17.3% | −20.1% | 0.86 | 7.2% |
| ICICI Prudential Mid Cap Fund | 18.0% | −21.3% | 0.72 | 5.3% |
| Edelweiss Mid Cap Fund | 16.7% | −20.1% | 0.74 | 5.0% |
Volatility is the annualised standard deviation of daily returns; the worst fall is the deepest peak-to-trough drop in the last three years. The Sharpe ratio uses a 6.5% risk-free rate. Alpha is the fund's return above what its beta to the benchmark predicts.
What a monthly SIP earned
| Fund | 3-year SIP return (a year) | 5-year SIP return (a year) |
|---|---|---|
| Invesco India Mid Cap Fund | 9.75% | 18.13% |
| ICICI Prudential Mid Cap Fund | 7.36% | 15.38% |
| Edelweiss Mid Cap Fund | 6.04% | 15.82% |
| Category median | 4.50% | 12.95% |
SIP returns are annualised (XIRR) for ₹10,000 a month. They differ from lump-sum returns because each instalment buys at a different price.
Same rule, different crowns
5 different funds take the five measures below, which is the point: the answer depends on what you ask.
| Measure | Fund | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Best 1-year return | ICICI Prudential Mid Cap Fund | 1.37% |
| Best 5-year return | Motilal Oswal Midcap Fund | 18.25% |
| Lowest expense ratio | Kotak Mid Cap Fund | 0.5459% |
| Lowest volatility | SBI MIDCAP FUND | 13.5% |
| Highest Sharpe ratio | Invesco India Mid Cap Fund | 0.86 |
Mid cap funds swing harder than large caps: every fund in the table fell by a fifth or more at some point in the last three years. A fund that leads on 3-year return is not always the one that led on 5-year return, so a longer record can point somewhere else entirely.

What this ranking cannot tell you
It looks backward over a single window. It ignores the fund house, the manager's tenure, the portfolio and its overlap with what you already own. Past returns do not predict future ones, and a fund's rank can change with the next month's NAV. For any fund here, open its page to see the full record, and use the compare tool to set two side by side. This is a data read-out, not advice to buy or sell.
