The rule behind "best"

"Best" is not one thing, so this post fixes a rule and applies it the same way in every category of this series. Of the 30 large cap funds with a 3-year record, 19 are open to new money, hold at least ₹1,000 crore (average AUM, July–September 2026) and have a 5-year record. They are ranked by 3-year compounded annual return, Direct plan, Growth option, from NAVs to 27 October 2026. On that rule the leader is Invesco India Large Cap Fund at 13.67% a year, against a category median of 9.98%. With no filter, Taurus Large Cap Fund sits first at 13.88%, but it is a small fund, at ₹58 crore, so it does not clear the rule.

A large cap fund must keep at least 80% of its money in the 100 biggest listed companies by market value. That puts a ceiling on how far it can stray from the index, so the gap between first and last place is narrower than in mid or small caps. It also means the leader's edge, when it exists, comes from a handful of stock choices and from what it avoids.

The top five

Fund 1 year 3 years 5 years 10 years Expense ratio AUM (₹ crore)
Invesco India Large Cap Fund −3.88% 13.67% 9.39% 13.38% 0.91% 1,949
Bandhan LARGE CAP FUND −6.61% 12.66% 8.72% 12.64% 1.08% 2,144
Nippon India Large Cap Fund −9.80% 10.65% 11.05% 13.65% 0.86% 53,646
DSP Large Cap Fund −9.96% 10.53% 8.36% 10.33% 1.17% 7,113
Tata Large Cap Fund −7.26% 10.34% 7.73% 11.73% 1.25% 2,530
Category median −7.79% 9.98% 7.55% – – –

Returns of a year or more are compounded annual rates. Invesco India Large Cap Fund leads the median by 3.68 points a year over three years, and Bandhan LARGE CAP FUND follows at 12.66%.

Risk: what the lead cost

Fund Volatility (3 yr) Worst fall (3 yr) Sharpe ratio Alpha vs Nifty 100 TRI
Invesco India Large Cap Fund 14.5% −18.2% 0.49 4.6%
Bandhan LARGE CAP FUND 13.5% −18.0% 0.46 3.5%
Nippon India Large Cap Fund 13.7% −15.4% 0.30 1.7%

Volatility is the annualised standard deviation of daily returns; the worst fall is the deepest peak-to-trough drop in the last three years. The Sharpe ratio uses a 6.5% risk-free rate. Alpha is the fund's return above what its beta to the benchmark predicts.

What a monthly SIP earned

Fund 3-year SIP return (a year) 5-year SIP return (a year)
Invesco India Large Cap Fund 4.16% 10.59%
Bandhan LARGE CAP FUND 2.29% 9.11%
Nippon India Large Cap Fund −0.15% 9.04%
Category median 0.09% 6.98%

SIP returns are annualised (XIRR) for ₹10,000 a month. They differ from lump-sum returns because each instalment buys at a different price.

Same rule, different crowns

4 different funds take the five measures below, which is the point: the answer depends on what you ask.

Measure Fund Value
Best 1-year return Invesco India Large Cap Fund −3.88%
Best 5-year return Nippon India Large Cap Fund 11.05%
Lowest expense ratio Canara Robeco Large Cap Fund 0.63%
Lowest volatility DSP Large Cap Fund 12.4%
Highest Sharpe ratio Invesco India Large Cap Fund 0.49

The category has been hard on returns lately: the median fund lost money over the last year. A fund that leads on three years can still be behind the pack on five, and the table shows exactly that for several of these names. Large cap leadership has rotated a lot, so treat a three-year crown as a snapshot of one window.

What this ranking cannot tell you

It looks backward over a single window. It ignores the fund house, the manager's tenure, the portfolio and its overlap with what you already own. Past returns do not predict future ones, and a fund's rank can change with the next month's NAV. For any fund here, open its page to see the full record, and use the compare tool to set two side by side. This is a data read-out, not advice to buy or sell.
