The rule behind "best"

"Best" is not one thing, so this post fixes a rule and applies it the same way in every category of this series. Of the 37 flexi cap funds with a 3-year record, 24 are open to new money, hold at least ₹1,000 crore (average AUM, July–September 2026) and have a 5-year record. They are ranked by 3-year compounded annual return, Direct plan, Growth option, from NAVs to 27 October 2026. On that rule the leader is Bank of India Flexi Cap Fund at 18.16% a year, against a category median of 11.56%. With no filter, ITI Flexi Cap Fund sits first at 18.23%, but it is too young to have a 5-year record (its AUM is ₹1,526 crore), so it does not clear the rule.

A flexi cap fund must keep at least 65% in equities but may hold large, mid and small companies in any mix. The manager decides the blend, which is why two flexi cap funds can behave like entirely different products: one close to a large cap fund, another with a heavy mid and small cap tilt.

The top five

Fund 1 year 3 years 5 years 10 years Expense ratio AUM (₹ crore)
Bank of India Flexi Cap Fund 2.27% 18.16% 14.61% – 0.89% 2,876
Motilal Oswal Flexi Cap Fund −4.15% 16.68% 11.58% 12.31% 1.19% 13,799
HDFC Flexi Cap Fund −5.52% 15.27% 14.38% 15.17% 0.75% 1,10,925
Aditya Birla Sun Life Flexi Cap Fund 0.46% 15.02% 10.58% 13.12% 0.91% 28,241
ICICI Prudential Flexi Cap fund −2.27% 14.98% 13.38% – 0.88% 24,586
Category median −4.85% 11.56% 9.09% – – –

Returns of a year or more are compounded annual rates. Bank of India Flexi Cap Fund leads the median by 6.60 points a year over three years, and Motilal Oswal Flexi Cap Fund follows at 16.68%.

Risk: what the lead cost

Fund Volatility (3 yr) Worst fall (3 yr) Sharpe ratio Alpha vs Nifty 500 TRI
Bank of India Flexi Cap Fund 17.6% −23.7% 0.66 7.9%
Motilal Oswal Flexi Cap Fund 17.0% −21.5% 0.60 7.4%
HDFC Flexi Cap Fund 12.1% −13.3% 0.72 4.8%

Volatility is the annualised standard deviation of daily returns; the worst fall is the deepest peak-to-trough drop in the last three years. The Sharpe ratio uses a 6.5% risk-free rate. Alpha is the fund's return above what its beta to the benchmark predicts.

What a monthly SIP earned

Fund 3-year SIP return (a year) 5-year SIP return (a year)
Bank of India Flexi Cap Fund 6.92% 15.23%
Motilal Oswal Flexi Cap Fund 5.53% 13.69%
HDFC Flexi Cap Fund 4.23% 12.92%
Category median 2.61% 8.92%

SIP returns are annualised (XIRR) for ₹10,000 a month. They differ from lump-sum returns because each instalment buys at a different price.

Same rule, different crowns

5 different funds take the five measures below, which is the point: the answer depends on what you ask.

Measure Fund Value
Best 1-year return Quant Flexi Cap Fund 2.98%
Best 5-year return Bank of India Flexi Cap Fund 14.61%
Lowest expense ratio Nippon India Flexi Cap Fund 0.66%
Lowest volatility Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund 9.9%
Highest Sharpe ratio HDFC Flexi Cap Fund 0.72

That freedom shows in the risk columns. The volatility gap between the steadiest and the bumpiest fund in this table is several points a year, and the biggest fund by AUM is not the 3-year leader. Compare the way each fund got its return, not just the number.

What this ranking cannot tell you

It looks backward over a single window. It ignores the fund house, the manager's tenure, the portfolio and its overlap with what you already own. Past returns do not predict future ones, and a fund's rank can change with the next month's NAV. For any fund here, open its page to see the full record, and use the compare tool to set two side by side. This is a data read-out, not advice to buy or sell.
