What we counted
AMFI publishes each fund house's average assets for the quarter. WealthTicker's fund list gives the number of schemes. Dividing one by the other shows how thinly or thickly a house spreads its money.
- Assets: average AUM for July–September 2026, excluding domestic fund-of-funds, for the 55 houses that report it, in total ₹87,21,848 crore.
- Schemes: one Direct Growth plan record per scheme, excluding fund-of-funds and segregated portfolios. The count includes ETFs and closed-ended plans, which still hold assets, so it can be higher than the number of schemes open to new investors.
Where the money sits
| Fund house | Schemes | Average AUM (₹ crore) | AUM per scheme (₹ crore) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI | 109 | 13,09,607 | 12,015 |
| ICICI Prudential | 512 | 11,55,871 | 2,258 |
| HDFC | 124 | 9,69,076 | 7,815 |
| Nippon India | 426 | 7,87,053 | 1,848 |
| Kotak Mahindra | 216 | 6,14,116 | 2,843 |
| Aditya Birla Sun Life | 89 | 4,41,787 | 4,964 |
| UTI | 232 | 4,02,337 | 1,734 |
| Axis | 71 | 3,82,966 | 5,394 |
| DSP | 58 | 2,44,022 | 4,207 |
| Mirae Asset | 36 | 2,37,421 | 6,595 |
| Tata | 66 | 2,36,199 | 3,579 |
| Bandhan | 68 | 2,17,749 | 3,202 |
| PPFAS | 7 | 1,69,069 | 24,153 |
SBI's ₹12,015 crore per scheme is the highest among the large houses: 109 schemes carry a very large pool. PPFAS is the extreme: seven schemes, ₹1,69,069 crore, more than Edelweiss, Invesco, Motilal Oswal or HSBC manage with 44 to 51 schemes each.
Four houses, half the schemes
ICICI Prudential, Nippon India, Kotak and UTI together have 1,386 of the 2,821 schemes (49%) but manage ₹29,59,376 crore (34%) of the assets. Their per-scheme averages are ₹2,258, ₹1,848, ₹2,843 and ₹1,734 crore, all below the industry average of ₹3,092 crore.
The long tail of scheme counts is mostly closed-ended history. Of ICICI Prudential's 512 schemes, about 411 carry "fixed maturity", "interval", "series" or similar words in the name, which usually marks a plan launched for a fixed term. Our smallest funds post looks at the other end, where the assets are tiny.
The thin end
| Group | Houses | Schemes | Total average AUM (₹ crore) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Houses under ₹10,000 crore | 19 | 147 | 50,418 |
| Share of industry | 35% of houses | 5% of schemes | 0.6% of assets |
Nineteen of the 55 houses manage less than ₹10,000 crore each, and together they hold 0.6% of industry assets. The median house runs ₹1,498 crore per scheme, and 22 houses run under ₹1,000 crore per scheme, among them Union (₹952 crore, 30 schemes, see its fund house page), Bank of India, ITI and JM Financial. A newer house with a handful of funds can show a very low figure simply because it is early in its build-up; our rank-change table shows how houses have moved over five years.
What the ratio does and doesn't say
- It is not a quality score. A high figure means a few schemes hold most of a house's money; a low one can mean a young house or one with many small or closed plans.
- The numerator excludes fund-of-funds, and the denominator excludes them too, so the figures compare like with like but understate houses that run many FoFs.
- A large scheme is not automatically a better one. Our fund-size study looks at equity funds by size and returns.
- Counts depend on definitions. One scheme with two plans is counted once here; AMFI's own counts can differ.
