A quiet month

Only five new schemes published their first NAV in May 2026, counting each fund's Direct plan, Growth option. All five are index funds. It is the fewest in any month since at least January 2024, counted among funds still publishing a NAV, and well below the 18 that started in May 2025.

One more scheme began publishing in May and is left out. Shriram Overnight Fund's first NAV, on 30 May, was ₹1,254.19, not a launch price near ₹10 or ₹1,000. That looks like an existing portfolio under new scheme codes rather than a fresh offer, so it is not counted as a launch.

The list

First NAV Scheme Index
6 May Axis Nifty India Defence Index Nifty India Defence
15 May Invesco India BSE Sensex Index BSE Sensex
15 May Invesco India Nifty Bank Index Nifty Bank
25 May Axis Nifty Capital Markets Index Nifty Capital Markets
27 May Groww Nifty Private Bank Index Nifty Private Bank

Three of the five track a slice of the financial sector: all banks, private banks, and capital-market companies such as exchanges and brokers. One tracks defence stocks. Only Invesco's Sensex fund follows a broad market index.

The slowdown

Month (2026) New schemes
January 11
February 22
March 25
April 11
May 5

After a busy February and March, launches have fallen two months running. From January to May 2026 the total is 74, against 81 in the same five months of 2025. Until April, 2026 had been ahead, 69 to 63.

The mix has shifted as well. February's launches were half active equity funds; of the 16 schemes that started in April and May, only one, JioBlackRock Large Cap, is an active equity fund.

Did they track their indices?

An index fund has one job: follow its index. For four of the five, the first weeks can already be checked against NSE's index levels:

Fund From Fund change to 4 Jun Index change
Axis Nifty India Defence Index 6 May −0.83% −0.82%
Invesco India Nifty Bank Index 15 May +1.11% +1.11%
Axis Nifty Capital Markets Index 25 May −5.28% −5.32%
Groww Nifty Private Bank Index 27 May −1.51% −1.50%

All four tracked within a few hundredths of a percentage point. Invesco's Sensex fund was 1.08% below its first NAV of 15 May; the Nifty 50, for comparison, fell 0.96% over the same days.

Axis Nifty Capital Markets Index had the roughest start, down 5.28% in under two weeks, because its index fell from 5,648.90 to 5,348.20.

What this does not tell you

A small month is not a trend. Launch counts move with fund houses' own calendars and approvals. Two quiet months say little about the rest of the year.

Tracking over days is not tracking over years. Close early tracking is expected; what separates index funds over time is cost and the small slippages that compound.

The count leaves out ETFs. It is built from Direct Growth NAVs, which ETFs do not have.

Where to go from here

The guide to index funds and ETFs covers how these funds work, and tracking error and standard deviation explains how to judge how well one follows its index. For the month before, see the new funds of April 2026, and for how the market moved in May, the May 2026 market recap.
