The list

NFOs are new schemes that sell units for the first time at a fixed price, usually ₹10. The listing WealthTicker keeps from the AMCs' own announcements shows 12 NFOs with an October 2026 opening date, all open-ended, up to 16 October.

The mix

Type Count
Index funds 7
Exchange traded funds 3
Fund of funds 1
Active equity 1

Ten of the twelve are index funds or ETFs that copy an index, and an eleventh, the JioBlackRock fund of funds, invests in other funds rather than in shares directly. The only scheme that depends on a manager picking stocks is the Carnelian Small Cap Fund. Carnelian does not yet appear in our fund list, so there is no existing scheme to compare it with.

Crowded corners

Several of these launches enter spaces that already have funds in them. Counting Direct Growth plans on WealthTicker's list by name:

  • Nifty 500: five funds already exist (Axis, DSP, ICICI Prudential, Motilal Oswal and SBI). Kotak's would be the sixth. See our Nifty 500 and total-market comparison.
  • Nifty Midcap 150: about 15 funds already track it; quant's is another. See the Midcap 150 comparison.
  • Nifty 50: two dozen or more funds carry the name, and quant's adds to them. Our October comparison shows how close their costs and tracking are.
  • Nifty 100: a thin field of three, so quant's would be a fourth.

For a fund that copies an index, being late to a crowded index matters less than its expense ratio and tracking difference, which are only known after some months of running.

Newer ground

The more unusual launches are the two "Plus G-Sec 70:30" index funds from HDFC and Motilal Oswal, which combine an equity index (Nifty LargeMidcap 250 and Nifty Midcap 150) with a government-bond index in a fixed 70:30 split, and the sector and theme funds: the Nifty Pharma ETF, Zerodha's top-10 banks ETF, the SBI defence ETF and Axis's EV and new-age automotive index fund. For where these indices stand on valuation, see our posts on Nifty Pharma, Nifty EV & New Age Automotive and Nifty India Defence.

What a new fund lacks

  • No return history. There is nothing to rank, so a new index fund can only be judged by the index it copies. See should you invest in an NFO for the checks.
  • No cost record. The stated expense ratio is a ceiling set by the AMC. Whether it is cheap shows only against the other funds tracking the same index.
  • No tracking record. Tracking difference needs months of data; our tracking error study explains what to look for.
  • No bargain in the ₹10 price. A unit priced at ₹10 is not cheaper than one priced at ₹500; only the portfolio and the costs matter.

None of this is a view on any of these funds, and none is a recommendation to buy or avoid a new fund offer.
