A simple question
The daily headline often reads "Nifty falls as FIIs sell". How tight is that link? This post lines up NSE's daily FII and DII cash-market net figures with the Nifty 50's change on the same day for every session from 10 September 2024 to 13 October 2026, 518 sessions in all. Flows are in rupees crore, and the Nifty figure is its closing price change without dividends.
FII flows sorted into four equal groups
We ranked the 518 sessions by FII net flow and split them into four groups of about 130.
| FII net flow group | Net flow range (₹ crore) | Average Nifty move | Days the Nifty rose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heaviest selling | −21,106 to −3,760 | −0.47% | 31% |
| Moderate selling | −3,753 to −1,667 | −0.06% | 41% |
| Light selling or small buying | −1,651 to +284 | +0.10% | 57% |
| Net buying | +290 to +14,064 | +0.38% | 66% |
The step is steady. The heaviest-selling quarter of days averaged a fall of 0.47% and saw the index rise on fewer than a third of them. The strongest-buying quarter averaged a gain of 0.38%, with the index up two days in three.
The other cut: buy or sell
FIIs were net buyers on only 151 of 518 sessions, 29%. Split by sign:
| FII net buyer | FII net seller | |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions | 151 | 367 |
| Nifty rose | 66% | 41% |
| Average move | +0.34% | −0.16% |
Flows and the index fall together on bad days. The Nifty fell by 1% or more on 53 of the sessions, and FIIs were net sellers on 51 of them.
DIIs run the other way
The correlation between FII net flow and the Nifty's daily move over these 518 sessions is +0.42. For DIIs it is −0.31.
A negative number means that DII buying tends to be heavier on days the market falls. The two groups are mostly on opposite sides: on 358 sessions, 69%, FIIs sold while DIIs bought. On days DIIs were net buyers, the Nifty rose just 47% of the time. Our post on FII selling and DII buying, quarter by quarter follows the offset through the year.
What this does and doesn't show
A correlation of 0.42 is meaningful, but it is far from perfect, and it explains only a part of the day's move. Domestic flows, global markets, results and news all play into the same session.
The data also cannot separate cause from effect. FIIs may sell because the market is falling, the market may fall because they sell, or both may react to a shared event such as a global sell-off. The recent run is covered in FII selling for nine sessions in a row, and the full daily record is on the FII and DII data page.
Figures are NSE's provisional daily cash-market numbers, and the period is only about two years, so it is a snapshot and not a long-run law. Nothing here is advice to buy or sell.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Nifty 50 rise when FIIs buy?
More often than not. Across the 518 sessions from 10 September 2024 to 13 October 2026, the Nifty rose on 66% of days when FIIs were net buyers and on 41% of days when they were net sellers. The average daily move was +0.34% and −0.16%. This describes the same day, not what comes next.
Do DIIs buy when the Nifty falls?
Largely. The correlation between DII net buying and the Nifty's daily change is −0.31, the opposite sign to FIIs' +0.42. On 358 of the 518 sessions, 69%, FIIs were net sellers and DIIs net buyers.
Do FII flows predict the Nifty?
This data cannot say. Both flows and prices are recorded on the same day and respond to the same news, so a strong link does not show that flows cause the move or lead it. The pattern is a description of the days, not a signal.
