The ledger to 16 October

On NSE's provisional cash-market figures, FIIs/FPIs sold a net ₹48,769 crore of Indian equities across the 11 sessions from 1 to 16 October 2026, and DIIs bought ₹48,168 crore. The sum of the two is −₹601 crore: foreign selling is slightly ahead of domestic buying. Our FII/DII data page carries the daily rows.

Period Sessions FII net (₹ crore) DII net (₹ crore) Combined
1–9 Oct 6 −39,779 +40,355 +577
12–16 Oct 5 −8,991 +7,813 −1,178
October to date 11 −48,769 +48,168 −601

The first six sessions did the damage. FIIs sold on all six, with the largest day of the month, ₹12,944 crore on 8 October, when DIIs bought ₹10,703 crore. That is one of the nine sessions in 2026 on which DIIs bought more than ₹10,000 crore, which we look at in our post on the biggest DII buying days.

A month already bigger than September

FIIs sold ₹44,013 crore in all of September. Their October total passed that on 14 October, the ninth session of the month.

Month FII net (₹ crore) DII net (₹ crore) Combined
Jan 2026 −41,435 +69,221 +27,786
Mar 2026 −1,22,540 +1,42,961 +20,420
Apr 2026 −70,136 +51,064 −19,072
Jun 2026 −49,029 +85,800 +36,772
Jul 2026 −5,779 +35,099 +29,320
Aug 2026 −7,532 +58,268 +50,737
Sep 2026 −44,013 +76,030 +32,017
Oct 2026 (to 16th) −48,769 +48,168 −601

March remains the outlier, with a ₹1,22,540 crore net sale. April is the one month in the last 13 where DIIs fell clearly short. October's half-month is already the fifth-largest FII outflow of the year, behind March, April, May and June, and the month is not over. For the long view, our quarter-by-quarter look at the offset has the longer record of how often domestic buying matched foreign selling.

The reversal on Friday

On 16 October FIIs were net buyers of ₹1,166 crore, the first net-buying session since 23 September; they had sold on every session in between, as our post on the nine-session streak described. On the same day DIIs were net sellers of ₹3,661 crore, their first net-selling session since 10 August and the second-largest of 2026 after ₹4,721 crore on 17 April.

One day does not make a pattern. On 10 August the sides swapped in the same way, with DIIs selling ₹1,290 crore as FIIs bought ₹1,975 crore, and the selling resumed in the weeks after.

How often DIIs cover the selling

Of the 141 sessions in 2026 on which FIIs were net sellers, DIIs bought more than FIIs sold on 96, about two in three. October's 10 selling sessions did a little better than that: DIIs covered the selling on seven and fell short on three: the 7th, the 8th and the 15th.

What the numbers do not tell you

Provisional is not final. NSE publishes these figures after the close and revises them; the monthly totals above are sums of the daily figures as we stored them.

Cash market only. The numbers exclude derivatives and the primary market, so an FII can be a net seller here and a net buyer through an IPO or block deal.

A tie is not a signal. Equal and opposite flows say who traded with whom, not where prices go next. Our two-year look at FII selling and the Nifty found no pattern in the day after a heavy-selling session.

None of this is investment advice.
