Why read a fund page in order
A fund page on this site runs to more than a dozen sections, and most people stop at the headline return. That is the least stable number on the page. This walk goes top to bottom through one well-known fund, HDFC Flexi Cap Fund Direct Growth, and says what each section is for. Every figure is as of the NAV of Wednesday 15 October 2026.
A strip of tabs pins below the header as you scroll: Performance, Scorecard, Returns & risk, Category rank, Rolling returns, Backtest, Tax, Portfolio, AMC profile, News and FAQ. Tabs appear only when the section has something to show.
The header: NAV, house and category
The header gives the NAV, ₹2,180.468, the one-day move, and the date the NAV is as of. Under the name are two links: the fund house (HDFC Mutual Fund) and "Best Flexi Cap Funds", the category list this fund sits in. Two buttons follow, Compare and SIP calculator. Compare opens a head-to-head with this fund already loaded.
Performance: the chart
The Performance card plots the NAV history. Where the fund has a benchmark, a toggle switches to a rebased comparison against it; for this fund that is the Nifty 500 TRI. Under the chart a range bar shows where the NAV sits between its 52-week high and low.
Scorecard: four verdicts with the numbers behind them
This is the section to read first. Each card carries a verdict word and the figure it came from, measured against the fund's sub-category:
| Card | Verdict | The number behind it |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Strong | 3Y CAGR +14.75%, 7th of 36 flexi caps |
| Risk | Low | Volatility 12.1% vs 14.3% category average |
| Cost | Low | Expense ratio 0.75% vs 1.19% average |
| Consistency | High | 95% of rolling 3-year windows were positive |
The star badge, 5 stars against 36 peers here, sits above the cards with a bar showing its weights: 60% performance, 15% risk, 10% cost and 15% downside. "How this is computed" opens the explanation. The star rating glossary entry covers what a star does and does not say.
Returns & risk, and Category rank
The Returns & risk grid lists trailing returns and the risk ratios. For this fund: 1Y −2.73%, 3Y 14.75%, 5Y 14.63% and 10Y 15.44% a year; Sharpe 0.68, beta 0.83, and a maximum drawdown of −41.84% since the Direct plan began in January 2013. Below it, each return is lined up against the sub-category average for the same period.
Category rank then gives the fund's position on each metric. Among flexi-cap peers HDFC Flexi Cap was 24th of 42 on 1-year return, 7th of 36 on 3-year, 2nd of 27 on 5-year, 2nd of 36 on Sharpe and 1st of 36 on Sortino. The 1-year rank is the one that moves most from month to month. Where a fund ranks among its peers works through this card in detail.
Rolling returns and Backtest
Rolling returns, which needs a free account, opens on 1-year windows; switch it to 3Y to see every 3-year window in the fund's history. Across 130 of them the Average was 17.25% and the Median 17.77%, with the Worst at −5.05% and the Best at 35.90%. The rolling vs trailing returns guide explains why this card carries more weight than any single trailing figure.
Backtest, open to everyone, runs a SIP or a one-time investment through the fund's actual NAVs. A ₹10,000 monthly SIP over the last five years went in as ₹6.00 lakh and was worth ₹8.31 lakh on 15 October, an XIRR of 13.41%. Calendar-year returns sit beside it for the "what did it do in 2022?" question.
Tax and Portfolio
The Tax section states how the fund's gains are taxed. As an equity fund, gains on units held under a year are short-term and taxed at 20%; after a year, long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year are taxed at 12.5%.
A peer table follows, lining the fund up against its sub-category on returns, P/E, expense ratio and AUM, with a shortcut into Compare. Then Portfolio, from HDFC's own monthly disclosure for 30 September 2026: 94.97% in equity across 79 holdings, 2.29% in REITs and 2.28% in cash. The top three holdings were ICICI Bank at 8.80%, Axis Bank at 6.11% and HDFC Bank at 6.03%, and the disclosed portfolio turnover was 11.74%. Further down: month-on-month buys and sells, other funds with similar stocks, the worst falls and recoveries (sign in), and fund size over time. AMFI's figure for July to September 2026 was ₹1,10,925 crore, up from ₹1,01,793 crore the quarter before.
AMC profile, News and FAQ
The AMC profile names the managers from the scheme's filings. HDFC Flexi Cap's Scheme Summary Document names Amit Ganatra as the scheme's fund manager since 1 February 2026. That matters when you read the 10-year record: it was mostly built before he took over. Checking a fund manager's record shows how to look at that. The FAQ at the foot of the page is written from this fund's own numbers.
What the page does not do
It does not tell you whether to buy HDFC Flexi Cap or any other fund. Every figure is history, computed from AMFI NAVs with the formulas on the methodology page. Portfolio data can be up to a month old, and the exit load (1% within a year here) is in the scheme facts, not deducted from any return shown. To set this fund against another, the side-by-side comparison guide gives a reading order. Nothing here is a recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
What should I look at first on a mutual fund page?
Start with the Scorecard, which turns four numbers into verdicts against the fund's sub-category. For HDFC Flexi Cap Direct Growth on 15 October 2026 it read Strong performance (7th of 36 flexi caps on 3-year CAGR), Low risk (12.1% volatility against a 14.3% average), Low cost (0.75% against 1.19%) and High consistency (95% of rolling 3-year windows positive).
Do I need an account to see everything on a WealthTicker fund page?
No account is needed for the NAV chart, scorecard, returns, category rank, backtest, tax, portfolio and FAQ sections. Two cards ask you to sign in with a free account: Rolling returns, and the worst falls and recoveries card.
Why does a 5-star fund still show a negative 1-year return?
The star rating ranks a fund against its own peers over three years, not against zero over one. HDFC Flexi Cap held 5 stars on 15 October 2026 with a 1-year return of −2.73%, because most flexi-cap funds fell further and its 3-year and 5-year records sit near the top of the group.
