The ratio today

On 21 October 2026 the database's India rate for gold was ₹12,583 per gram and for silver ₹174.91 per gram. Dividing one by the other gives a gold-silver ratio of 71.9: it takes about 72 grams of silver to match one gram of gold.

The ratio matters only as a gauge of relative price. When it rises, gold has gained on silver (or silver has lost to gold); when it falls, silver has done better. It says nothing on its own about which metal is cheap in absolute terms.

Against 6,554 readings

The database holds daily rupee rates for both metals from 30 August 2000. Computing the ratio for every day with both prices gives 6,554 readings:

Statistic Ratio
Mean 69.2
Median 68.4
Today (21 Oct 2026) 71.9
Highest 125.9 (18 Mar 2020)
Lowest 32.0 (25 Apr 2011)

Today's 71.9 is a little above the mean and median. 57.9% of the daily readings since 2000 were lower, so the ratio is neither stretched nor compressed against its own history.

At the low in April 2011, gold was ₹2,147 per gram and silver ₹67.11; the 2020 peak was recorded on 18 March 2020.

What the number does and does not tell you

  • It is a rupee ratio. Both rates are India prices, so duty and currency effects sit in both numerators and largely cancel, but it need not match a dollar-spot ratio to the decimal.
  • A reading near the median is not a signal. Mean reversion in a ratio is a hypothesis, not a promise: the 2018–2024 stretch above 75 lasted years.
  • Funds differ from metal. Gold and silver fund-of-funds carry expense ratios and tracking differences; see the gold FoF returns and silver FoF returns posts for their one- and three-year numbers.
