The question

Star ratings are given fund by fund, but they can also be added up by fund house. Take every Direct Growth equity fund that has a rating on 21 October 2026 (546 funds across 46 fund houses; ETFs, segregated portfolios and IDCW twins excluded) and count how many of each house's funds sit at four or five stars. Overall, 181 of the 546 funds (33.2%) are at four or five stars, so a house at 33% is average.

Thirty houses have at least eight rated equity funds. In rank order:

What stands out

  • Houses with few rated funds top the list. Bajaj Finserv has eight rated equity funds, so each one is 12.5 points of its percentage; WhiteOak has twelve.
  • ICICI Prudential combines size and spread. With 36 rated equity funds it has the most, and 20 of them are at four or five stars; only 6 sit at one or two.
  • HDFC has a barbell shape: 5 five-star funds and 10 one-or-two-star funds out of 22. Axis shows a similar split (4 five-star, 7 low out of 17).
  • Sundaram and UTI have the largest low-rated groups. Sundaram has 14 of 22 at one or two stars; UTI has 11 of 18; Aditya Birla Sun Life has 11 of 25.
  • Canara Robeco and ITI have no low-rated funds at all: zero at one or two stars out of 12 each.

Why share is not the same as skill

A fund is rated against the other funds in its own sub-category. That has two consequences for a house-level tally:

  1. A house's mix matters. A house with many funds in a category where many peers are strong will find its funds crowded to lower stars, however good the funds are in absolute terms.
  2. Index-like and sector funds are rated too. A house heavy in thematic or sector products will see its tally move with those groups' fortunes in the current market.

Stars are also dated. The rating moves when a fund's three-year window moves, so a house that had a strong 2023 may look different on the next recompute. For the underlying method, see how the star ratings are calculated; for the relationship between stars and returns, see the 5-star versus 1-star comparison. A different cut of the same question, which uses the three-year median instead, is the fund house report card.

Using this on the site

Each fund house has a page, and the AMC comparison guide explains how to read it. In the screener you can filter to a house and a star rating to see which funds make up each count above.

Frequently asked questions

Which fund house has the highest share of 4-5 star equity funds?

Among the 30 houses with at least eight rated Direct Growth equity funds, Bajaj Finserv: 6 of 8 (75.0%), followed by Invesco with 11 of 17 (64.7%) and WhiteOak Capital with 7 of 12 (58.3%).

Which large fund house has the most 4-5 star equity funds?

ICICI Prudential: 20 of 36 rated equity funds (55.6%), including 7 at five stars.

Does a high share of stars mean the fund house is better?

Not by itself. The share depends on which categories a house is in and how many funds it has. It describes the current rating mix, not the quality of the next fund.
