Road tax rates are indicative and pre-filled from published 2026 state schedules — they are set by state notification, several states compute the tax on a pre-GST invoice value rather than the ex-showroom price, and individual RTOs differ, so overwrite the percentage with the one on your quotation. Electric vehicles are shown at 0%, which is correct in the majority of states but not all. The 1% TCS under section 206C(1F) applies above ₹10 lakh and is not a cost: it is collected by the dealer, appears in your Form 26AS, and is credited against your income tax when you file, so it comes back. Insurance is estimated at 3% of ex-showroom for the mandatory bundle — your actual premium depends on the model, your city and your no-claim bonus.

Independent · No commissions · No fund-house data — how the numbers are computed

How it works

Every advertisement quotes the ex-showroom price, and it is the one number you can be certain you will not pay. On-road price adds state road tax, the mandatory insurance bundle, tax collected at source on cars above ten lakh, and registration with the number plate and FASTag. In the higher-tax states that comes to close to a fifth of the sticker price.

Road tax is the largest and most variable addition. It is set by each state, varies by fuel type and by price slab, and several states compute it on a pre-GST invoice value rather than the ex-showroom price. The state picker here pre-fills a published rate as a starting point and leaves the field editable, because a wrong number you cannot correct would be worse than typing the one on your quotation.

One line in the total is not a cost at all. The one per cent collected under section 206C(1F) on vehicles above ten lakh is tax collected at source: it appears in your Form 26AS and is credited against your income tax when you file. It is shown separately here rather than buried, because treating it as part of the price overstates what the car costs you.

The calculator then finances the balance after your down payment, so the EMI is based on the on-road price rather than the ex-showroom figure — which is the mistake that makes a loan look smaller than it is.

On-road price = ex-showroom + road tax + insurance + TCS above 10 lakh + registration and FASTag + accessories

The loan is the on-road price less your down payment, so the EMI reflects what you actually have to finance rather than the advertised price.

Frequently asked questions

How much more than ex-showroom is the on-road price?

Typically ten to twenty per cent, driven almost entirely by which state you register in. Road tax alone ranges from around two and a half per cent in the smaller union territories to over twenty per cent in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu at higher price points. Insurance adds roughly three per cent for the mandatory first-year own damage and three-year third party bundle, and registration and the number plate are near enough uniform nationally.

Do I have to pay TCS when buying a car?

One per cent is collected by the dealer on any motor vehicle above ten lakh under section 206C(1F). It is not an extra tax on the car: it is an advance against your income tax, it shows up in your Form 26AS and annual information statement, and you claim credit for it when you file your return. If your total tax liability is lower than what was collected, it comes back as a refund.

Is road tax lower on electric cars?

In most states it is waived entirely, which is the single largest purchase incentive electric vehicles carry and often worth more than a lakh on a mid-priced car. A number of states levy a reduced rate rather than nothing, and several exemptions are time-limited by notification, so the rate shown for electric here is zero and should be checked against your state's current position before you rely on it.

Why does the same car cost more in one state than another?

Ex-showroom prices are close to uniform because GST is a central levy, but road tax is a state subject and the spread is wide. The same fifteen lakh car can differ by well over a lakh on the road between neighbouring states. Registering a vehicle in a state you do not live in to save tax is not a workaround, since road tax follows where the car is normally kept and re-registration is required after a move.
