Two questions, one dataset
Every month each fund house publishes what its schemes own. A fund page reads that disclosure one way: here is a fund, what does it hold? The Stocks pages read it the other way: here is a company, which funds hold it, and how much? That answers questions a fund page cannot. Is a stock you own already in your funds? Which fund has the biggest bet on it? Is the ownership spread out or concentrated?
The figures here come from the latest disclosures the site held on 15 October 2026, nearly all of them for 30 September.
Step 1: the Stocks list
What Indian mutual funds own covers the 1,392 schemes whose portfolios the site holds. The main table ranks the top 120 stocks by how many schemes hold them, with seven columns: #, Stock, Schemes, MF money, Avg weight, Largest and P/E.
| Stock | Schemes | MF money | Avg weight | Largest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ICICI Bank | 759 | ₹2,80,620 Cr | 6.22% | 22.4% |
| HDFC Bank | 732 | ₹2,91,982 Cr | 6.57% | 32.1% |
| State Bank of India | 685 | ₹1,18,070 Cr | 3.76% | 33.4% |
| Bharti Airtel | 680 | ₹1,36,587 Cr | 3.65% | 22.5% |
| Reliance Industries | 656 | ₹1,63,034 Cr | 4.32% | 32.7% |
"Schemes" counts each scheme once, because its Direct and Regular plans hold the same portfolio. "MF money" is each holder's weight applied to its scheme's AUM, summed. So the two columns can rank differently: ICICI Bank is in more schemes, HDFC Bank has more money behind it.
Below the table is a section titled "What mutual funds bought and sold last month", and an A–Z directory of all 845 stocks held by ten or more schemes. The most-held stocks of 2026 reads this table in more depth.
Step 2: open one stock
Click a name, or a holding on any fund page, and you reach that stock's page. Take Larsen & Toubro. The header reads "Held by 590 mutual fund schemes, ₹99,738Cr between them". Four tiles follow: Schemes holding (590), MF money (₹99,738 crore), Largest weight (15.6%) and P/E (25.6).
A short summary follows, written from the data. For L&T it said the largest single position was SBI Nifty 50 ETF, holding 4.2% of its portfolio in the stock. That is ₹8,937 crore, 9.0% of all mutual fund money in L&T. The five largest holders account for 25% of it.
Step 3: read the holders table
"Funds holding Larsen & Toubro Limited" lists up to 60 schemes, largest rupee position first, with Fund, Category, Weight, Position and Fund size:
| Fund | Category | Weight | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI Nifty 50 ETF | Other ETFs | 4.20% | ₹8,937 Cr |
| SBI BSE Sensex ETF | Other ETFs | 5.11% | ₹6,187 Cr |
| HDFC Flexi Cap Fund | Flexi Cap Fund | 3.08% | ₹3,416 Cr |
| ICICI Prudential Large Cap Fund | Large Cap Fund | 3.82% | ₹3,047 Cr |
| UTI Nifty 50 ETF | Equity ETF | 4.20% | ₹3,047 Cr |
| SBI Large Cap Fund | Large Cap Fund | 5.31% | ₹2,904 Cr |
Two kinds of holder are mixed here, and it helps to separate them. Index funds and ETFs hold L&T because the index does: the Nifty 50 weight of 4.20% shows up identically in SBI's and UTI's Nifty ETFs. Active funds hold it by choice, so their weights vary: 3.08% in HDFC Flexi Cap, 5.31% in SBI Large Cap. When an active fund holds a stock well above its index weight, that is a deliberate bet.
The highest weights are elsewhere. Bharat 22 ETF carried L&T at 15.59%, the "Largest weight" tile, and two infrastructure ETFs at about 11.9%. Those are narrow indices where one company is a large share by construction.
If the stock's funds changed their holdings last month, a "Funds buying and selling" table follows, with each fund's move. What mutual funds bought most in September uses the same data across all stocks.
Why this is useful
- Overlap. If you hold L&T directly and three large-cap funds, you own it four times. The overlap guide shows how to count that.
- Conviction. An active fund with a weight far above the index is the one whose result depends most on that stock.
- Crowding. A stock held by few funds behaves differently from one held by 700. Stocks only a few funds own looks at the thin end.
What the stock page does not tell you
Positions are as of the last month-end, and funds can trade in between. A scheme whose portfolio the site has not collected is not counted at all. "Position" needs a scheme AUM, and for L&T was available for 576 of the 590 holders. A stock being widely held is not an argument for buying it, and nothing here is a recommendation. The P/E ratio shown is the company's own, where available.
Frequently asked questions
How can I find which mutual funds hold a particular stock?
Open the stock's page from WealthTicker's Stocks list, or from any holding on a fund page. It lists every scheme holding the stock, largest rupee position first, with the weight in each fund's portfolio. Larsen & Toubro, for example, was held by 590 schemes with about ₹99,738 crore between them in the latest disclosures.
Which stock do the most Indian mutual funds own?
ICICI Bank, held by 759 schemes in the disclosures behind the Stocks page in October 2026, ahead of HDFC Bank at 732 and State Bank of India at 685. By rupees invested the order changes: HDFC Bank had about ₹2,91,982 crore of mutual fund money against ICICI Bank's ₹2,80,620 crore.
How current is mutual fund holdings data?
Fund houses disclose full portfolios monthly, a few days to a couple of weeks after month-end, so a position on the stock page can be several weeks old. Most figures in this post come from disclosures for 30 September 2026; a few fund houses' latest files were still for 31 August.
