Below the middle of its range
The comparisons start on 31 March 2021, when NSE moved its index P/Es to consolidated earnings. That leaves 1,362 sessions to 5 October.
| P/E | |
|---|---|
| 5 Oct 2026 | 16.39 |
| Lowest since Mar 2021 (22 Jun 2022) | 4.75 |
| Median since Mar 2021 | 18.74 |
| Highest since Mar 2021 (3 Jun 2024) | 35.74 |
A total of 549 sessions closed lower, about the 40th percentile. The range is wide: the high is 7.5 times the low.
The index rose and the P/E fell
| Index | P/E | Earnings behind the index | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Oct 2025 | 10,092.95 | 19.30 | about 523 |
| 30 Mar 2026 | 11,138.40 | 18.89 | about 590 |
| 30 Jun 2026 | 12,519.15 | 16.69 | about 750 |
| 5 Oct 2026 | 12,498.00 | 16.39 | about 762 |
The last column is the index divided by its P/E, a rough stand-in for earnings per index unit. Over the year the index rose 23.8% and the earnings measure rose about 46%. That is why the P/E fell. Since 31 December 2025 the index is up 11.9%, from 11,167.65.
Its record close, 13,718.30, came on 27 May 2026. It is now 8.9% below that. The Nifty 50, for comparison, is down 13.7% this year and 14.3% below its own January high.
A cyclical sector's P/E misleads both ways
Look at the same October date across five years.
| Index | P/E | Earnings behind the index | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Oct 2021 | 5,638.80 | 8.85 | about 637 |
| 3 Oct 2022 | 5,593.95 | 6.41 | about 873 |
| 3 Oct 2023 | 6,798.00 | 24.73 | about 275 |
| 1 Oct 2024 | 10,222.95 | 33.61 | about 304 |
| 1 Oct 2025 | 10,092.95 | 19.30 | about 523 |
In October 2022 the P/E was 6.41, which looked absurdly cheap. The earnings behind it then fell by about two-thirds in a year, and a year later the P/E read 24.73 with the index 21.5% higher. A low metal P/E at a profit peak and a high one at a trough both point the wrong way.
Today's earnings measure, about 762, is back near the 2021 level of about 637 and below the 2022 peak of about 873. It has climbed for three years. What it does next depends on commodity prices, which no index ratio can tell you.
Against the Nifty 50
Metal's P/E of 16.39 is 0.85 times the Nifty 50's 19.30. The Nifty 50's own P/E has been lower on only 8 sessions since 2021, so the market itself is cheap against its history, and metals sit a little below it.
What this does not tell you
The P/E looks backwards. It divides by the last twelve months of profit, which for metals can be a very different number from the next twelve.
The ratios update in steps. A P/E can move on a day with no change in price, when new quarterly results feed in. The published numbers cannot separate company results from changes in the index's members.
Concentration. A handful of steel, aluminium and mining companies drive the index.
These are indices, not funds. Funds that hold metal stocks carry their own mix; see sectoral and thematic funds.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Nifty Metal P/E ratio now?
Nifty Metal closed at a P/E of 16.39 on 5 October 2026, with the index at 12,498.00. Its price-to-book ratio was 2.66 and its dividend yield 1.50%. Since 31 March 2021 its median P/E is 18.74, and 549 of 1,362 sessions closed lower than today.
Why did the metal P/E fall while the index rose?
Because profit rose faster than price. The index is up 23.8% over the year to 5 October 2026, while its P/E fell from 19.30 to 16.39. Dividing one by the other, the earnings behind the index rose about 46%.
Is a low metal P/E a sign of cheapness?
Not reliably. Metal earnings swing with commodity prices, so a P/E can look low at a profit peak and high at a trough. In October 2022 the P/E was 6.41 and in October 2023 it was 24.73, on earnings that had fallen by about two-thirds.
