The day in numbers

On Wednesday 8 April 2026 the Nifty 50 rose 3.78%, from 23,123.65 to 23,997.35. That is a gain of 873.70 points.

  • It is the index's biggest one-day percentage rise since 12 May 2025, when it gained 3.82%.
  • In points, it is the second-largest daily gain in our record. Only 12 May 2025, at 916.70 points, was bigger. A higher index level makes point moves larger, so the percentage is the fairer yardstick.
  • 41 of the 50 stocks in the current Nifty 50 rose. Shriram Finance gained 9.9%, Adani Enterprises 8.6% and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles 8.4%. Coal India fell 3.0%, the day's weakest.

Most of the rest of the market moved as much or more; IT was the exception:

Index 7 Apr 8 Apr Change
Nifty 50 23,123.65 23,997.35 +3.8%
Nifty Next 50 63,151.05 66,145.30 +4.7%
Nifty Midcap 150 20,110.90 20,909.45 +4.0%
Nifty Smallcap 250 14,900.95 15,483.50 +3.9%
Nifty Bank 52,716.25 55,703.90 +5.7%
Nifty IT 31,403.35 31,565.80 +0.5%

Nifty Bank's 5.7% was its largest daily rise since 1 February 2021. India VIX, the market's gauge of expected volatility, fell 20.2% to 19.70, its fourth-largest one-day fall since our VIX data begins in 2014.

Where it ranks

Our daily closing record for the Nifty 50 starts on 17 September 2007. Up to 8 April 2026 it holds 4,567 daily changes. Thirty-nine of them were larger rises than 8 April's, which puts it 40th. Counting only NSE's own closes, which start in February 2012, it is 12th.

Rank Date Rise
1 18 May 2009 +17.7%
2 7 Apr 2020 +8.8%
3 31 Oct 2008 +7.0%
4 25 Jan 2008 +7.0%
6 25 Mar 2020 +6.6%
17 20 Sep 2019 +5.3%
36 12 May 2025 +3.8%
40 8 Apr 2026 +3.8%

The largest rises cluster in the worst periods. Of the 40 biggest up days, 31 came when the index had closed the day before at least 10% below its previous high: in 2008, 2009, September 2019, March and April 2020, and now. Big up days and big down days tend to arrive together, because both belong to periods when prices swing widely.

That is the honest reading of a day like this. It says the market is volatile. It does not, by itself, say the fall is over.

Where it leaves the index

Level 8 Apr vs. it
Record close, 2 Jan 2026 26,328.55 −8.85%
Close on 8 Apr 23,997.35
Year's low close, 30 Mar 22,331.40 +7.46%

The Nifty 50 has risen 7.46% in the six sessions since 30 March, and on closing levels it is back above the line that marks a 10% fall from the high. Its P/E closed at 21.09, against 19.62 on 30 March.

The selling by foreign institutions has not stopped. On NSE's provisional figures FIIs were net sellers on each of April's first five sessions, including ₹2,812 crore on 8 April, a total of ₹37,934 crore. Domestic institutions bought ₹34,617 crore over the same five sessions.

What this does not tell you

One day is one day. A big rise is not a recovery, and the record above is full of them that came in the middle of long falls.

Our record starts in 2007. Earlier days are not ranked, so the ranks are within that window only.

Prices, not total returns. Nothing here is advice to buy or sell.

Where to go from here

How the fall to the 30 March low compares with earlier ones is in the Nifty 50 down 15%, and the month that produced it is in March 2026 in numbers. The Nifty 50's P/E in April has the valuation side.

For funds, balanced advantage funds in the March fall looks at one way of riding out swings like these. And the psychology of a market crash is about the temptation, on a day like 8 April, to read too much into one session.
