Counting the new highs

A "record close" here is a daily close above every earlier daily close in the Nifty 50's history, which begins on 1 January 1999 in our data. 1999 is used only to set the first high, so the table starts in 2000 and a record is always a record against at least a year of history. Records cluster: a market that makes one often makes a dozen more in the same weeks. Between clusters there can be years with none.

What the counts say

  • 491 record closes in 6,616 sessions, or about 7.4% of all sessions.
  • The busiest years were 2006, 2014 and 2021, with 54 record closes each.
  • Seven years had none: 2001, 2002, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2025. Those are the years in which the index was still below an earlier peak the whole time.
  • A year with record closes can still end lower. Look down the last column: highs early in a year do not guarantee a good finish.

The latest record

The most recent record close was 2 January 2026 at 26,329. On 16 October 2026 the Nifty 50 closed at 23,146, 12.1% below it, 287 days later. For how long the index has historically taken to climb back, see how long the Nifty 50 took to regain each peak.

Reading the table

  • A record is about the price level, not value. After a long rise, the share of record days is high exactly when valuations are also high.
  • Counts depend on the data: days when the exchange was shut are not in the series, and the first year starts from the first close.
  • Price index only; dividends are not included.
  • Nothing here predicts the next record. See also Nifty 50 deepest fall in every year.
