The measure
For each NSE index with closing prices on WealthTicker we took the highest close in the 12 months to 16 October 2026 and compared the latest close with it. We kept the 121 equity indices with a full year of history, and left out the inverse and leveraged Nifty 50 indices, the dividend-points index and India VIX, which behave differently. The figures are price levels; dividends are not added.
The headline
| Indices | |
|---|---|
| At a 52-week high | 1 (Nifty Media) |
| Within 5% of the high | 11 |
| 10% or more below | 54 |
| 15% or more below | 8 |
| 20% or more below | 2 |
| Median distance | 9.3% below |
Nearly half the indices (54 of 121) are at least 10% below their 12-month high, but only eight are 15% or more below. The market is a broad moderate fall, not a collapse in a few corners.

How to read this
- A distance from a 52-week high is a snapshot. It depends on when the high happened: an index that peaked last week and one that peaked ten months ago can show the same figure and mean different things.
- Large caps are further from their highs than small caps today. For the longer view, our five-year look at NSE indices shows what earnings and valuations did.
- Index funds track these levels, so a fund following a sector index is roughly as far from its own high as the index is, less costs and tracking differences.
- This is a description of where prices stood and not a forecast or a recommendation to buy or sell any index or fund.
