Six months, six net sales
Between 1 January and 30 June 2026, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold a net ₹3,45,744 crore of Indian equities. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought a net ₹4,70,137 crore. The Nifty 50 went from 26,129.60 at the end of 2025 to 23,865.75 on 30 June, down 8.66%.
FIIs were net sellers in every one of the six months. All figures are NSE's provisional cash-market numbers in ₹ crore, the series on our FII and DII data page.

| Month | FII net | DII net | Nifty 50 in the month |

March dominates: 35% of the half-year's FII selling in one month, the largest month on both sides in our record. The two quarters were otherwise close. FIIs sold ₹1,70,616 crore in January to March and ₹1,75,128 crore in April to June. DIIs bought ₹2,50,605 crore and ₹2,19,533 crore.
In gross terms FIIs bought ₹19,15,795 crore and sold ₹22,61,539 crore over the half. Across 120 sessions they were net buyers on 28 and net sellers on 92.
Against the first half of 2025
Our daily record starts in September 2024, so the same half of 2025 is the one like-for-like comparison we have.
| January to June | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions | 123 | 120 |
| FII net | −1,22,351 | −3,45,744 |
| DII net | +3,57,576 | +4,70,137 |
| Sessions with FII net buying | 46 | 28 |
| Sessions with DII net selling | 19 | 12 |
| Nifty 50 over the half | +7.92% | −8.66% |
FII selling in the first half of 2026 was 2.8 times that of the first half of 2025. DII buying was 31.5% higher.
The shape differs too. In 2025 the selling was concentrated at the start: FIIs sold ₹1,46,363 crore in January and February, then turned net buyers in each of March, April, May and June. In 2026 there was no such turn. February came closest, at ₹6,641 crore, and March followed with the heaviest month we hold.
Set against the whole of last year, the half-year figure is larger still. In all twelve months of 2025, FIIs sold a net ₹3,06,419 crore. In six months of 2026 they have sold 12.8% more.
The gap DIIs filled
Over the half, DII buying exceeded FII selling by ₹1,24,393 crore. In only one month, April, did FII selling outrun DII buying, by ₹19,072 crore.
And yet the index fell 8.66%. In the first half of 2025, DIIs out-bought FIIs by ₹2,35,224 crore and the index rose 7.92%. This year DIIs bought more in absolute terms, but FIIs sold far more, and the margin between the two roughly halved. Whether that margin matters for prices is not something two half-years can settle.
July so far
The first five sessions of July show a change of tone, small as it is. From 1 to 7 July FIIs were net buyers of ₹539.2 crore in total, with purchases on three of the five days. DIIs bought ₹6,397.7 crore, and the Nifty 50 closed on 7 July at 24,398.70.
Five sessions are too few to call a turn. June also had a quiet second half, after seven sessions of heavy selling.
What this does not tell you
Two years of history is short. "The largest" here means largest since September 2024. Our record cannot say how 2026 compares with earlier periods of foreign selling.
Flows do not set prices alone. The first half of 2026 had more domestic buying than the first half of 2025 and a worse index. Everyone who trades sets the price, not two groups' net totals.
The figures are provisional and partial. NSE publishes them each evening for the cash market only, rounded here to ₹0.1 crore a day. NSDL's monthly FPI data, which includes debt and primary-market deals, will differ.
A flow is not a forecast. Six months of selling says nothing certain about the next six.
